Athletics: Olympic effort for Stowmarket's Jordan

Stowmarket Striders runner Tamara Jordan notched up an impressive scalp on her way to victory in the third leg of the Suffolk Winter League Cross Country meeting at Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds.
She finished ahead of former Olympic Games marathon runner Sally Eastall. Eastall ran for her former club St Edmunds Pacers, where the 48-year-old 1990 Olympian is an honorary member, and came home ninth.
But Jordan will have been more pleased to beat Jo Coates., who had finished ahead of her to win the Haughley Park leg of the event.
Jordan finished in 34mins 06secs, 17 seconds ahead of the St Edmunds pacers runner.
The fourth leg of the series is at Ditchingham, near Bungay, on Sunday.

Football: Tricky task for Stowmarket Town

There is no easy way back to winning ways for Stowmarket Town on Saturday.
Thetford Town are the visitors to Greens Meadow, 3pm, on the back of a five-match unbeaten league record. Indeed since holding Stow to a 2-2 draw in November, Thetford have lost only one of eight games.
In contrast, Stowmarket have hit a dip in form to slip out of the promotion places with three defeats in a row and just one win in five games in 2011.
Town have boosted their strike force with the signing of Craig Simpson from SIL Premier Division side Stanton, where he had struck ten goals in ten games.
In midweek, Thetford crashed 5-1 at King's Lynn Town in the Norfolk Senior Cup.

Golf: Davis, Fowler and Southgate lead the way

There have been plenty of strong performances in the February Medal at Stowmarket Golf Centre.
Club pro Duncan Burl said: "I would particularly like to mention Wendy Southgate and Angela Fowler for playing four under their handicap, a really good score.
"This week is a non competition week, we will be playing Winter League matches were we can.
"The group stages finish at the end of February and those with the most points will go through to the knockout."
Colin Davis was the Division One winner with a gross 36 to reduce his handicap by one to eight. Leading man was Roy Thompson, who went round in 33 and also dropped his handicap by one to four.
Angela Fowler topped Division Two with a gross 43, nett 25, reducing her handicap from 18 to 16 in the process. Tony Hughes was the leading man, going round in 38 and lowering his handicap by two to ten.

Football: Barton blasts five of the best for Old Newton

There was no first or reserve team action for Old Newton United on Saturday but that did not stop the goals.
Club historians have been checking their records after Adam Barton hit five of the A team's goals in a 6-1 win over Woolverstone United Reserves.
It is one of few times a player has notched a nap-hand for Old Newton and he joins an illustrious list including Brian Browne, John Kerry, Tony Williams, Ray Wells and Billy Arnold.
But it still leaves him short of Brian Browne’s eight goals in a 15-2 victory over Manor House Reserves in 1963 and A Williams and R Wells' double hat-tricks in a remarkable 29-2 victory over Washbrook in 1966 when all 11 players, including goalkeeper M Plant, got on the scoresheet.

The Reserves have now won four of their last five games after failing to win any of their opening nine matches.

Football: No cup luck for Haughley

Bramford Road Old Boys 1 Haughley United 0
The luck of the cup was non existent for Haughley at Whitton Sports Centre this afternoon.
Despite overwhelming their Division Two opponents in the first half and carving out several good chances in the second, Haughley's Omnico Cup hopes were ended by an own goal.
Haughley put their poor Senior Division record to one side with a fine first-half performance during which they were in full control but unable to gain fruit from their dominance.
And they were made to pay four minutes after the interval when Dean Offord's free-kick into the six-yard box looped into the net off a defender for the only goal of the game.
Ash Hawes tested home goalkeeper Daniel Wilson after eight minutes with a shot which he was unable to hold but the loose ball was fired over the bar.
Hawes then headed over James Nickless' far post cross before a fine tackle robbed Nathan Smith with the goal beckoning.
Wilson pulled off a good save to keep out Smith's 18-yard effort after 16 minutes but could only watch 14 minutes later when James Garnham chipped the ball narrowly over the bar.
Haughley came closest to finding the net after 34 minutes when a corner was only cleared to the edge of the box and a shot struck Ali Mayhem but he was unable to divert it on target. Aaron Robinson sent another chance over the bar from the corner of the penalty area before the hosts went close with their best chance of the half after 41 minutes. Luke Garnham evaded three challenges on a charge from his own half but when he pulled the ball across the face of goal, no-one was able to get a decisive touch.
The Old Boys took the lead early in the second half and could have doubled the lead soon after when Offord's defence-splitting pass released Garnham but Arron Mayhew blocked well.
Haughley substitute Jason Woods had a good chance to equalise after 66 minutes when he was released by Callum McLuckie but Wilson was equal to his shot. Wilson knew little about Hawes' close-range shot son after which hit his chest in a goalmouth scramble and then Hawes had a header cleared off the goal-line as Haughley pushed hard.
Mayhew pulled of a magnificent close-range finger-tip save to deny the hosts a second goal after 71 minutes.
Defender Shaun Taplin wasted a glorious chance to score after Smith's surging run took him to the goal-line but when he pulled the ball back, Taplin's six-yard shot flew over the bar.
But it was the Old Boys who came closest to grabbing the game's second goal in the first minute of stoppage time when they broke from prolonged pressure from the visitors. Matty Sharland looked to have beaten Mayhew with a fine chip but the goalkeeper managed to get his fingers to the ball to push it onto the bar and the rebound was hacked clear.
Despite three minutes of additional time, Haughley were unable to find a way back and it was the hosts who moved forward to face Division One high-fliers Wickham Market in the quarter-finals.
Bramford Road OB: Wilson, Kersey, Thornton, Stollery, Padmore, Taber, Hammond (Sharland, 82), Johnstone, M Smith, L Garnham (Forbes, 86), D Offord.
Substitutes (not used): Godbold, C Offord.
Haughley: Arron Mayhew, Nickless, Lewis, Ally Mayhew, Taplin, Firman, Hawes, Robinson, N Smith, J Garnham (Woods, 61), McLuckie.

Rugby: Defeat costs Stowmarket top spot

Stowmarket RUFC suffered only their second league defeat of the season this afternoon but it cost them top spot in the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One table.
A 21-0 reversal at West Norfolk saw the King's Lynn-based team leapfrog them.
Cantabrigian also won, 14-9 against Holt, to leave things tight at the top.

Rugby: Second points loss blow for Stowmarket RUFC

Stowmarket RUFC have suffered another blow ahead of this afternoon's match at title Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One rivals West Norfolk, but this time their opponents are equally affected.
Bottom-placed Haverhill, who Stow beat 33-12 last week, have resigned from the league, according to this morning's East Anglian Daily Times.
It follows the recent demise of Fakenham and means that Stowmarket, as well as having the 107-0 and 69-0 wins over the Norfolk side expunged from their record, have now also lost 104-6 and the 33-12 wins over Haverhill.
West Norfolk beat Haverhill 61-7 and had the home match awarded, so will also lose two wins, but third-placed Cantabrigian, who Stow play at Chilton Fields next week, had only played them once and will only lose one set of points.
It does mean there is unlikely to be any relegation to Eastern Counties Two this season.
The league table is yet to be adjusted.
