Old Newton were left ruing two controversial refereeing decisions on their way to an emphatic defeat in Ipswich this afternoon.
A lack-lustre game burst into life after 24 minutes when Tom Abbott ran clear for the visitors and, spotting home goalkeeper Tony Garnham off his line, tried to lob him. But the keeper used his hands outside the penalty area to stop the shot.
Despite referee Graham Mackay blowing for a free-kick, he took no further action and Garnham was allowed to stay on the pitch.
Ten minutes before half-time Craig Lockwood hammered the visitors ahead but the hosts were gifted an equaliser within a minute. Chris Wiliams' shot was adjudged by the assistant referee to have crossed the line after hitting the bar, despite a lack of appeals from Ransomes players, who looked just as bemused as the defenders about the decision.
Old Newton can have few complaints about the second half though, as they were out fought and out thought by the league leaders.
Russ White put Ransomes ahead after 53 minutes when goalkeeper Gary Hammond failed to clear and Jermaine Harewood made it 3-1 soon after.
Williams headed in an undisputed second before substitute Oliver Duncan completed the scoring with his first touch in the 76th minute and again in stoppage time.
Old Newton had chances of a consolation but saw Aaron Shave, Adam Barton and Julian Turner denied in a late goalmouth scramble and then Garnham tipped over a 20-yard strike from Lockwood.
