Badminton: League title for Stowmarket's Christopher

Stowmarket's Louise Christopher was crowned girls' singles champion at the Ipswich & District Badminton League championship.
She beat club mate Isabel Lucas in the semi-final before taking on Claudette Reis in a thrilling final.
Louise came from 19-17 down to win the first set 22-20 but her Adastral Park opponent hit back to level with a 21-18 second-set win.
Claudette led 11-6 in the deciding set but Louise hit back and both players twice held match points before the Stowmarket player prevailed 24-22 to take the title.
Stowmarket's Ryan Newcombe and partner Gavin Coyne (YMCA) were runners-up in the boys' double competition and Stow's Jack Gray won the boys' plate.

Sport: New source of funding for Stowmarket area clubs

Suffolk Sport has launched a new web tool to help sports clubs find funding
While many in the world of sport are dreaming of Olympic and Paralympic success next year, many grassroots sports clubs are more concerned with ensuring their club can raise the funds necessary to provide extra training sessions, new kit or equipment or even improved facilities now.
The County Sports Partnership for Suffolk, has teamed up with web company Idox Information Solutions to provide a new, free service for local sports clubs in Suffolk. The web-based search tool on its website allows sports clubs throughout the Stowmarket area to search for new funding streams.
Suffolk Sport business development manager Tony Bush said: “This is another great service Suffolk Sport is providing for local sports clubs.
"We realise that accessing funding is one of the key issues for grass roots community sports clubs and the new funding search will help clubs find new funds and we can also offer help and advice when they apply”
“The search tool is completely free to use, all that is required is a quick registration on the Suffolk Sport website.”
Idox Information Solutions business development manager Daniel Andrews said: “The software takes users through an easy step-by-step process so that they can quickly identify the funds most relevant to their project.
"Our funding information is fully maintained by a team of in-house researchers so clubs can be sure they are accessing the very latest funding information.”

Football: Stalemate as Falcons double points tally

Cockfield United 0 Stowupland Falcons 0
A dogged defensive performance from Stowupland brought them their second draw in a week to double their season's point tally in Division One of the Kingsley Healthcare Suffolk & Ipswich League.
The Falcons withstood a first-half bombardment with a mixture of determined defending, a watertight offside trap and some woeful finishing from the hosts but in the end looked the more likely winners.
Merrill Clarke was as busy with his body as his hands, keeping shots out with whatever he could get in the way. After seven minutes he denied Carl Newdick at point-blank range but was grateful to right-back Luke Edgar soon after when he cleared off the line.
Callum Lee had Stowupland's first effort but his 20th-minute 15-yard effort was straight at keeper Connor Harrod.
Newdick looked to be in position to give the hosts a 30th-minute lead when he got on the end of an excellent flowing move but Clarke was alert to the danger to block at close range.
Another goal-line clearance kept the Falcons net protected when a corner was allowed to ping about the six-yard box and Stowupland twice withstood intense pressure as Cockfield pushed for a breakthrough.
But it was Stowupland who came closest to breaking the deadlock five minutes before half-time when Dan Lewis beat the offside trap but his 20-yard effort was tipped onto the bar and over by Harrod.
The second half was a more even affair. Clarke did well to paw away a swerving free-kick after 50 minutes and did even better to again throw his body in the way to block the follow-up.
Clarke then denied Newdick with the help of a post and that proved to be the hosts' last clear chance of the game as Stowupland started to find space to mount attacks of their own.
The best chance came with nine minutes to go when Dean Gridley's shot was fumbled at the foot of his post by Harrod but he recovered to keep out captain Blake Richards' attempts to convert the rebound.
Incredibly, this was the first league clean sheet Stowupland have kept  since March 2009.
Cockfield: Harrod, Chaplin, Pettitt (Grant, 76), Emms, L Newdick, Whight, Grove, C Newdick, Norman, Deeks, Gay.
Stowupland: Clarke, Edgar, Double, Dye, Richards, Taylor, Fruppell (Paton, 62), Gridley, Lee, Hilton (Godbold, 58), Lewis.
Substitutes (not used): Al-Aride, Mower.

A trio of bowlers from the club retained the under 17 trophy at a junior tournament staged during the World Indoor Championships, beating ten other clubs from across the East.
Leah Claireaux, Ben Parrish and Andrew Pulford beat a North Walsham team in the final 12-10 in front of a crowd of more than 600.
No doubt inspired by their famous club colleague, world number three Mark Royal who was watching from the stands in advance of his world indoor semi-final clash later in Presentations were made by Judy Potter, wife of the Potters Leisure Resort chairman, accompanied by Mark Hedges, whose Anglia Bowls team organised the tournament.

Football: Stowmarket Town romp into League Cup last four

Stowmarket Town 5 Team Bury 0
Two goals from Wayne Proctor
took his tally for the season to 21.

A clinical display of first-half finishing put Town through to the semi-finals of the Ridgeons League Cup at Greens Meadow this evening.
Four goals in the first 34 minutes killed off the young visiting team and Town simply had to go through the motions after the interval with only a strike from Under-18s substitute Tom Abbott on his first-team debut to add to their tally.
Not to say Bury did not have chances. In the first minute they forced a corner and only goal-line blocks prevented Nathan Prigg and Dan Galley scoring.
And midway through the first half, home keeper Kevin Bugg dropped two corners on his own goal-line, sparking frantic scrambles to clear.
However, at the other end, chances were wolfed up.
Marc Wake was inches away from giving Town a second-minute lead when he scooped Wayne Proctor's cross over from close range.
The opening goal came after ten minutes when a defender slipped in possession midway inside his own half. Dan Smith quickly latched onto the loose ball and dummied past one challenge before placing the ball into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Four minutes later hesitant defending allowed Proctor to steal the ball and he lobbed Craig Brand in the Bury goal from 30 yards.
James Horsfall looked to have added another when his shot flew towards the bottom corner but Brand threw out a hand to make a magnificent save at the foot of the post.
The third was not long in coming though with Proctor striking from even further out than his first goal. This time he made the most of Brand's headed clearance from outside his penalty area. The ball fell to Proctor and he chipped in from fully 35 yards for his 21st goal of the season.
Amazingly, the same happened six minutes later but this time centre back Connor Hall was in place to clear Proctor's shot off the line.
Right-back Dean Pleasence
scored the fourth goal
Left-back Dean Pleasence completed the first-half scoring, exchanging passes on the edge of the area before curling a delicious shot into the net off the far post.
The second half was an anti-climax with Town happy to let Bury pass the ball around the field without ever threatening goal.
Abbott ran through to score the fifth goal from Bugg's long free-kick and only the bar denied Dean Turnay-Godfrey making it half-a-dozen when Brand diverted his point-blank header onto the woodwork in stoppage time.Town will have to wait to see who joins them in the last four. Wroxham's match with Godmanchester was called off after the visitors' coach broke down en route to the Broads and the Wisbech versus Kirkley & Pakefield tie was postponed due to a waterlogged Fenland Stadium. Stanway play CRC tomorrow in the fourth quarter-final.
Stowmarket Town: Bugg, Pleasence (Hall, 53), McConnell, Smith, Birch, Horsfall, Myhill, Graham, Proctor (Abbott, 68), Wake, Tournay-Godfrey.
Scorers: Smith 10; Proctor (2) 14, 22; Pleasence 34; Abbott 72.
Team Bury: Brand, Thomas (Clarke, 66), Peters, Walker, Hitching, Hall, Watson, Curry (Rowe, 66), Prigg, Barker (Flatley, 66), Galley.
Substitute (not used): Greygoose.
Booking: Rowe (79, foul).
Read the Stowmarket Town website report on the match, here.

Football: More big games for Stowmarket Town

The big games just keep on rolling for Stowmarket Town.
After last week's First Division Cup quarter-final at Thetford and Saturday's Ridgeons League victory over leaders Cambridge University Press, Town return to Greens Meadow to take on Team Bury for a place in the semi-finals of the League Cup this evening, 7.45pm.
Then they are back on their travels on Saturday for a trip to form team Gorleston as they look to consolidate their promotion position.
Town have beaten Premier Division sides Hadleigh, Felixstowe and Histon Reserves so far in the League Cup but cannot afford to take things easy when fellow First Division side Team Bury visit.
Lee Drummond and Ben Luxford are unlikely to be fit for the game but new signing Andy Taylor should be in contention.

Football: Haughley seek new manager

Haughley United are on the look-out for a new manager following the resignation of Adam Riggey.
He had been in charge for three seasons.

Gareth Ward has left the club to join AFC Crowley.

Cricket: Early start for double-promotion winning Stowmarket CC

After a successful double promotion-winning season, Stowmarket Cricket Club start their coaching and net activities in February.

Football: Today's local results

Football: Old Newton go nap

A brace apiece from Aaron Shave and Adam Rickwood plus a goal from Mark Ismay brought Old Newton United their first away win since the opening day of the season in emphatic style.
The 5-0 win at Westerfield United was Old Newton's biggest league win of the season and completed a 9-0 double over the Rushmere-based side.

Football: Stowupland Falcons make their point

It's finally happened! Stowupland Falcons avoided defeat yesterday for the first time since December 2009 thanks to a 1-1 draw at Saxmundham Sports.
It ended a run of 28 consecutive SIL defeats stretching back to a 2-1 win at Ipswich Athletic on December 12, 2009.
The draw leaves Falcons just three points behind Halesworth Town at the foot of the Division One table but with a fantastic chance of registering a long-awaited victory next Saturday when they travel to third-bottom Cockfield.
Cockfield have lost eight of their last nine games and only just scraped to a 3-2 win at Stowupland in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Football: No luck for Salvation Army

Luck was against Salvation Army as they lost by a single goal at home to Somersham yesterday.
It stretched their losing SIL Division Two run to four matches but, whereas the previous three games had seen the team well beaten, scoring just one goal with 17 conceded, this time even the Somersham manager admitted the best team had lost.

Football: Haughley earn cup progress

SIL Senior Division strugglers Haughley United are through to the fourth round of the Omnico Cup thanks to a 2-0 win over Capel Plough this afternoon.

Rugby: Stowmarket stay ahead of the pack

Stowmarket maintained their lead at the top of the Eastern Counties One table with a fine 41-11 victory at Ely this afternoon.
Nearest rivals Cantabrigian had their game at Harwich & Dovercourt postponed but West Norfolk, Holt and Southwold all won.
Stow have won 12 of their 13 league matches this season but next week welcome the only team to have beaten them, Southwold.

Football: Proctor's strike helps Stowmarket Town close gap on leaders

A goal from Wayne Proctor was enough to secure Stowmarket Town victory at Ridgeons League leaders Cambridge University Press this afternoon.
The win leaves Town four points adrift of the pinnacle but with three games in hand.
More good news came with third and fourth-placed Ipswich Wanderers and Diss Town taking points off each other in a 1-1 draw.

Football: Cedars Park crushed by giants

Framlingham Town 6 Cedars Park 0
A depleted Cedars Park crashed out of the Omnico Cup at Senior Division Framlingham in a game goalkeeper Haydn Backhouse will want to forget.
The teenage custodian was caught out three times from long-range and The Lions never looked likely to pull off a cup giant-killing against a team from five rungs higher up the Suffolk & Ipswich League ladder.
Cedars Park manager Andy Kirk was back in the dug-out, having been in Australia for the Ashes at Christmas when the match was originally scheduled. But he was without key men Liam Edwards and Marcus Batley, both having started their own globetrotting adventures, and 15-goal top scorer Tom Lankester, who was unavailable.
It could not have been a worse start for the reshuffled Division Five visitors' ranks as they conceded a goal within a minute of the kick-off, Kieron Nicholls converting at the far post.
Cedars Park's sights of goal were few and far between but Stephen Holland started and finished a good move after 10 minutes, shooting at home keeper Simon Nunn from the edge of the penalty area.
The best chance for the visitors fell to centre-back Simon Anderson six minutes later but he headed high and wide from David Thompson's corner when he escaped his markers at the back post.
Backhouse pulled off a superb goal-line block to deny Michael Beaton but was beaten on the half-hour mark when he could only parry a free-kick and Ross Hutchins swept the loose ball home on the turn.
Left-back Craig Tostevin twice cleared Nicholls' close-range efforts off the line as The Lions hung on to trail by only two goals at the break.
But any glimmer of hitting back to pull off a cup upset were dashed within seven minutes of the restart.
Four minutes into the half Joel Steggell launched a 45-yard shot into the Cedars Park penalty area and disaster struck for Backhouse as he was caught off his line and could only flap at the ball as it looped into the net.
Nine minutes later Robert Harvey's free-kick from wide on the left flew straight into the net with Backhouse again bamboozled.
Danny Moore had a chance to pull a goal back when he cut inside and beat two defenders and Nunn with a shot but it lacked power and the goalkeeper was able to recover and pick the ball up before it crossed the line.
The agony piled up for Backhouse after 61 minutes when he pushed out Hutchins' 20-yard shot straight to Steggell for the left-back's second gift goal of the game.
The young goalkeeper recovered to pull off a tremendous save to keep out Danny Claxton's close-range flick but could do nothing to stop the substitute completing the scoring with the goal of the game. Claxton won the ball on the right wing and cut inside before curling the ball into the net off the post from the edge of the penalty area.
Backhouse did manage to end the game on a high though, denying Steggell's his hat-trick with a good block from a 15-yard pile-driver.
There was, however, some good news for Cedars Park with the reserves pulling off their own cup upset with a 7-5 extra-time victory over Bacton United Reserves in the Club Colours Cup.
Framlingham: Nunn, Whatling (Wilding, half-time), Steggell, Kerridge, Grover, Baker, Hutchins, Harvey, Beaton (Vincent, 65), Ward, Nicholls (Claxton, 51).
Substitutes (not used): Poacher, Chaplin.
Scorers: Nicholls 1; Hutchins 31; Steggell (2) 49, 61; Harvey 52; Claxton 76.
Cedars Park: Backhouse, Kennedy, Tostevin, Henke, Jacobs, Anderson, Firman (Coe, 65), Thompson, Holland, Allnutt, Moore (Bouldin, 84).
Substitute (not used): Greenwood.
