Lee Gaunt fires in Stanton's second goal. |
Stanton 5 Old Newton United 0
Old Newton were left wind-swept and well-beaten in the Senior Division of the Suffolk & Ipswich League this afternoon.
A strong diagonal wind made things difficult but Old Newton failed to take advantage of it in the first half and paid the price after the break as new signing Paul Musgrove pulled the strings from midfield after moving from Ridgeons Premier Division side Walsham-le-Willows.
The hosts did not use the No 3 or No 6 shirts in tribute to Dan Hazelton and Adam Taylor, who died in the recent Great Yarmouth steel tragedy, and a minute's silence was held before kick-off.
Old Newton tried their luck from the kick-off but the wind-assisted shot bounced over goalkeeper Andy Mustoe and the home crossbar.
Aaron Shave fired a weak ten-yard effort straight at Mustoe after four minutes and soon after the goalkeeper had to be alert when he caught Paul Thorndyke's shot at the second attempt after it squirmed from his grasp and bounced goalwards.
Stanton struggled to get out of their own half with most of their clearances bouncing unchecked down the hill and across the neighbouring pitch.
Old Newton came close to opening the scoring after 23 minutes when a corner found Richard Taylor at the far post but his header hit the outside of the far post.
Tom Abbott beat the home offside trap and rounded Mustoe after 34 minutes but his shot from a tight angle was cleared off the line by Toby Stewart.
Stanton made much better use of the strong wind in the second half and killed off the game with three goals in 11 minutes.
Musgrove's through ball was flicked in by Gary Newman for the opener after 58 minutes and Lee Gaunt doubled the lead seven minutes later when a free-kick found him at the far post.
Craig Oliver added the third and struck twice more in the closing stages to complete his hat-trick.
Aaron Shave battles his way through. |
