Bowls: Royal well placed for champion of champions berth

Stowmarket’s Mark Royal is handily placed for qualification for the Champion of Champions stage of the bwin.com bowls super8series.
The world No 3 is in fourth place after seven of his eight legs. His final day in the gruelling competition is on December 14 when he will be up against Billy Jackson, Robert Paxton and Kevin Carrie.
The world-class field also includes recently-crowned Scottish International Open champion Mervyn King and legendary Scot David Gourlay.
The competition started in August and Royal has so far managed a win and three second places in his aggregate score of 34 from the four-tournament series.
The top four players after the eight legs will qualify for the Champions of Champions grand final.

Current top eight:
1 David Gourlay 46, 2 Tim Stone 38, 3 Les Gillett 36, 4 MARK ROYAL 34, 5= Nick Brett* and Robert Paxton 32, 7 Jonathon Ross 28, 8 Greg Harlow* 26.
(All played seven legs, except * played six).
